Self-Improvement - Holding the Tension of Opposites


Hello Reader,

My self-improvement attitude is built on the notion of holding the tension of opposites within me; respecting myself and wanting to be better. It is easy to go from thinking, ‘I am not where I want to be’, to believing ‘I am not good enough in general’ - thus, not respecting or being happy with ourselves. Just because we are not where we want to be with one thing, does not mean we are not good enough as a whole human being!

So, my philosophy is to look at the nuance. I recognise that alongside the weaknesses (areas I want to improve in myself) there are also strengths (elements of myself that I am proud of). I hold this tension of opposites within me; I am good in a, b, c areas, but I know I can get better in x, y, z areas. I have my strengths and my weaknesses. Yes, sometimes I find it hard to remember my strengths when I am consumed by the things I want to improve, but I push myself to see both sides of the story.

Continuing in this vein, there are things that I am ‘good’ at, yet I know I can improve them - I want to better them. No resting on my laurels, no stopping for the brave. Again, my approach is to hold the tension of opposites within me; acknowledge where I am at with the skill, behaviour, habit, etc. and respect myself for that, as well as push myself to improve. Respect and want to be better.
