Mood Meter App

a wee review, instructions of use, benefits and limitations of the tool.

Hello Reader,

What a joy to have you here! Allow me to share a tool we can use to improve our Emotional Intelligence (EI).

Emotional Intelligence, at its core, is the ability to know our emotions, understand the emotions of others and express our emotions. Focusing on the first aspect of EI; that of knowing our emotions - we want to be aware of what we are feeling in real-time. We want to know our emotions in the present so that we can manage ourselves; for example, diffusing our anger before we explode, or acknowledging our anxiety before we are overwhelmed and burnout.

Instructions

The Mood Meter App is a catalyst for understanding our emotions in real time. Let me walk you through it …

Aim of Mood Meter App

Our aim is to build up our muscles of emotional awareness by using the Mood Meter App. As we progress, we want to use the tool as a means to develop our skills of emotional intelligence, become competent on our own and then leave the app behind.

Benefits

As you can see, it is a simple process. A simple process that nurtures our Emotional Intelligence in four key ways:

  1. Strengthens Emotional Awareness: using the App encourages us to examine our current emotions. This habit urges us to check in with ourselves and ask, ‘is this where I want to be?’

  2. Builds Emotional Vocabulary: the app displays 100 emotions, which allows us to describe what we are feeling with more depth and accuracy than we might otherwise be able to accomplish.

  3. Keeps Record: the app helps us recognize our patterns; showing us when and why we may have felt a certain way. This allows us to adjust these trends over time.

  4. Prompts Shift: The final step in the process is an excellent nudge, reminding us that we have the power to change our situation. Admittedly, I don’t find their suggestions incredibly useful, but the question itself is brilliant, because it urges us to take control of ourselves.

Limitations

Of course, there are limitations to the Mood Meter App; for me specifically, I dislike relying on my phone because I am already on it way much too frequently. Additionally, despite the wide range of emotions displayed, I occasionally find that it does not contain the exact feeling I am currently experiencing (in those situations, I will choose the closest emotion and write a more accurate one in the box).

Nonetheless, if you are looking to improve your emotional awareness, the Mood Meter App is a good place to start!

Wishing you an abundance of joy and warmth!
